Showers to overtake baths - Official

Has the desire for a long soak in the bath been swept away by the increasing demand for a fast paced life, that’s eco-friendly and better for your bank balance? By 2012 the shower sales within the UK’s bathroom market will have risen up to 5% more than the estimated bath sales, a recent report claims. So why are people opting for showers over the traditional bath?

One of the key features when selling a house is the bathroom, and the offer of a second shower room/en-suite is an attractive selling point to any buyer.

Most new build family houses will incorporate a family bathroom, consisting of a bath, basin, toilet as well as a shower. Extra to the family bathroom most ‘new builds’ also have a second bathroom ether as an en-suite or a shower room and with the governments plan of building 2 million new homes by 2016 could be a cause of the increase in shower sales.

Is it because it is more economically friendly….

Some research suggests that showers are more eco-friendly. According to one report it takes on average 30 gallons of water to fill a bath tub whereas a 5 minute shower will only use up to 20 gallons of water. So it would seem that showers are not only more eco-friendly but also will reduce the cost of utility bills.

However, this all depends upon what shower you have installed in your bathroom, the duration of showers and the size of your bath tub need to be taken into consideration. If you have a power shower installed in your house then you may actually use more water than if you were to have a soak in the bath. There are ways of lowering the amount of water used. By having a low flow rate shower installed you can use half the amount of water used by a normal power shower.

So why do we head for the shower rather than take a plunge in the tub?

With the fast pace of life it is sometimes much quicker to jump in the shower than having to wait for the bath to fill up. A long soak in a deluxe roll top bath has become more of a luxury than a daily routine.
