Hot Tub Filter Repair and Maintenance
Since there are no moving parts on a filter when it operates and few
when it is at rest, there's not much to break down. Therefore, when a
filter does have a problem, it is usually easy to repair. Since cartridge filters are the most common in hot tub applications, we will focus on repair
and maintenance of those. If your hot tub is large or is part of a pool/hot tub
combination, and you have a sand or DE filter, repair and maintenance
information can be found in The Ultimate Pool Maintenance Manual.
Filter Cleaning and Cartridge Replacement
RATING: EASY
The most important thing you can do for a hot tub is to keep a clean filter.
It is also the simplest way to ensure that the other components work
up to their specifications. Cleaning a cartridge filter is perhaps easies
of all.
1. Cut Off the Electricity Shut off the pump by switching off the circuit
breaker. This will make sure it won't come back on (from the time
clock, for example) until you're ready.
2. Isolate the Filter Plumbing Most hot tubs will have valves that allow you
to close off the water from the equipment. Close valves on both the
suction and discharge sides of the plumbing. If you don't have
isolation valves and the filter is below the level of the water in the
hot tub, drain the filter by opening the drain plug or backwash valve.
3. Disassemble the Filter Remove the retaining band and lift
the filter tank or lid from the base.
Remove the cartridge.
