Environmentally friendly hot tub maintainence
Chemicals
• Use nontoxic, biodegradable
alternatives to harsh cleansers.
Energy conservation
• Install solar heating.
• Double-cover your hot tub to trap more heat and reduce evaporation.
• Create windbreaks around
the hot tub to prevent heat loss
and evaporation with fencing, shrubs,
walls, or rockscapes.
• Insulate the exterior of
the hot tub (set it in-ground if
it isn't already).
• Don't leave the light on
except when you're using the hot
tub.
• Shut off the heater completely
if you're not likely to use the
hot tub for several days.
• Insulate pipes.
• Don't run pumps longer than
necessary. The average hot tub pump
uses as much energy each hour as
the average window air conditioner.
Water conservation
• Avoid excessive splashing.
Still water evaporates at one-half
(or less) the rate of disturbed
water.
• Use an unheated hot tub instead
of your home air conditioner for
relief on hot days. Take a dip to
cool yourself instead of cooling
the entire house.
• Check frequently for leaks.
You can waste a lot of water before
realizing you have a problem unless
you keep a good watch on the equipment
area and the water level.
• Don't hose off your hot tubs decks, use
a broom.
• Direct rainwater to the hot
tub for refilling. |
