On February 14th 2006 the chip and PIN system was introduced on the UK high street and as of July 1st 2007 it will become an internet standard and the same system will be implemented for all internet transactions.

All customers have to do is complete a one off registration with their card provider to use the verification service at no extra charge, resulting in consumers feeling rest assured that their card and bank account details are protected from possible fraudulent transactions.

Over 76.8 million chip and PIN cards have been issued and fraud was cut by £36 million in the first six months of 2005 alone.
