Bathroom washbasins come in just about every shape, colour and size you can imagine, but your selection will be made according to a logical blend of design and function. You might like the notion of a minimal ceramic basin that appears to float out from the wall with hardly any visible means of support, but this choice will only be possible if the structure of the bathroom wall is sufficiently strong to support a wall-hung basin. Start by finding out about the structure of your bathroom walls. Then decide which of the three basic basin types (pedestal, wall-hung or counter-top) you want, and see if this type comes in the shape, size, form and material that you have in mind. A successful installation depends on having a clear understanding of the options – precisely which type you are taking out, which type you are putting in, how the pipes run, how the set-up sits in relation to the room, and so on.

The Expert Points below will describe some of the options and show you how to get it right. Time spent researching all the available options is time well spent.

BASIN TYPE
If you are replacing an existing basin, it is easiest to fit one of the same type (but not necessarily the same colour or form).

ASSESS THE WALLS
Have a poke around in your bathroom. Find out about the structure of the walls — especially the wall where the basin is to be placed. If you have any doubts about the solidity or condition of the walls you can fit freestanding units.

SOLID WALLS
Solid walls are great for wall-hung basins, where the plumbing is to be mounted on the surface, but they are a problem if you won’t to conceal all the pipes. But then again, you can always make a feature of the pipes.

HOLLOW WALLS
J Hollow plasterboard walls are good for hiding pipes, but not so good if you want to have a wall-hung basin.

JP EDESTAL BASINS
A pedestal basin is a good option in that the pedestal not only supports the weight of the basin, it also conceals all the untidiness of the pipes behind it.

WALL-HUNG BASINS
Wall-hung basins ore a good option for small rooms where there is a shortage of Floor space — because you can mount the basin so that it partially hangs over the bath. However you must assess the walls.

WALL-HUNG CORNER BASINS
Miniature wall-hung corner basins are a good choice on two counts — they are ideal for very small roams, and can be fitted both to solid walls and hollow timber and plaster walls, so are ideal for any situation.

COUNTER TOP BASINS
Counter-top basins are a great idea in large bathroom, when you want to both conceal all the pipe work and have extra storage space under the basin.

FITTING A PEDESTAL BASIN

If you won’t to fit a washbasin in the shortest possible time and at the lowest possible cost, a small pedestal basin is the easiest option. The pedestal does push the price above that of a wall-hung basin of the same size, but it cuts down on the amount of work that will be involved in fixing the basin securely to the wall.

FITTING A COUNTERTOP BASIN
Counter-top basins are freestanding, with their weight being taken by the structure of the cabinet, so can be fitted independently of the walls.

A high-level WC cistern is the old-fashioned type that is fixed on a bracket above head height, with a long downpipe and a chain-operated flush. This type is ideal if you are restoring a pre-1 950s property. Reproduction and antique designs are readily available. Make sure that there is enough ceiling height to accommodate it.

LOW-LEVEL WC CISTERN
Low-level WC cisterns are the most common type. They are usually made of ceramic and fixed on brackets with a short downpipe and a lever-operated flush.

SLIMLINE WC CISTERN
A slim line WC cistern — a slender plastic cistern screwed directly to the wall, with a short downpipe and a lever- or knob- operated flush — is a good option if you are short of space and money.

DC LOSE-LINKED WC CISTERN
A close-linked WC cistern is designed so that the pan and the cistern are closely linked as a single feature. It is mode in ceramic, with no visible downpipe, and the U-bends or traps are part of the form. It can be tricky to fit, so is not a good idea if you are a nervous plumbing novice.

CONCEALED WC CISTERN
Concealed WC cisterns are made in ceramic, plastic or metal, and designed to be completely hidden from view behind a panel. The downside is that the panel has to be easily removable, so that the cistern can be maintained — this is undesirable if you want to tile the bathroom.

WASH-DOWN WC PAN
The wash-down WC pan — a traditional design that we all recognie — has the waste pipe running either back ; through the wall or down through the floor. It is a good, low-cost, easy-to-fit option, but you must make sure that you get a WC pan that has a ‘back through the wall’ or ‘down through the floor’ design so that it matches the original.

SINGLE-BEND SIPHONIC WC PAN
The single-bend siphonic WC pan is much like the traditional wash-down WC pan, with the waste pipe running either back through the wall or down through the floor. The pan and the cistern are closely linked, and the narrow outlet at the other side of the U-bend results in a swift, sucking, siphonic action. The single-bend siphonic pan is a good choice in that it is beautifully efficient, but it can be difficult to fit.

DOUBLE-BEND SIPHONIC WC PAN
A double-bend siphonic WC pan is like the single-bend siphonic WC pan in all respects, but with the addition of a second U-bend. The two U-bends and the siphonic action result in a partial vacuum between the two bends. This is a super-efficient model, but it is difficult to fit.

WALL-HUNG WC PAN
A wall-hung WC pan is like a single- bend WC siphonic pan in most respects, except the design is such that the pan appears to be suspended from the back wall. It can be obtained as a kit, complete with metal supports and a WC cistern. It’s a good choice for a modern bathroom.

REPEATING AN OLD DESIGN
If you want to replace an existing system with an identical unit, but are unclear about your precise needs, it’s a good idea to photograph the toilet and to take the picture to a specialist supplier.

When starting from scratch it is always worth considering how you will heat your bathroom. Many people are turning to under floor heating, in a room where flooring tends to be hard & cold, under floor heating can really add a touch of luxury.

Also heated towel rails are now a very popular practical accessory; from the designer contemporary style of the Luna to the more traditional charm of the Elizabeth, Victoria Plumb has a varied range to suit all bathrooms.

Bathing choice

Freestanding baths, such as the Ocean roll top, create a luxury feel but be sure to check your home plumbing allows for a freestanding style if you currently have a wall-mounted tub.
